Lesotho – Afriski from 180pp

SHARING THE RICHES OF THE MOUNTAINS

Closer to home but a world away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, Lesotho offers you a warm welcome – no matter how cold and snowy the winters may get. Explore the Maluti mountains, test your own limits on the slopes or discover the rich cultural heritage of the Basotho people – it’s all here for you.

Reflecting the diversity of Lesotho’s landscapes, Afriski offers experiences to suit just about everybody, no matter what season it is and what you’re into. Summer is trails time: MTB, Enduro, hiking and altitude training. And when the snow falls, it’s time to strap on your skis or snowboard and head for the slopes or Kapoko Snow Park.

MAKE THE MOST OF SUMMER

As meltwater swells the clear, fast mountain streams, alpine flowers announce the arrival of summer. With miles of trails offering challenges, rewards and views in equal measure, Afriski is a superb summer destination for anyone who loves the outdoors – and it doesn’t get any greater than the Maluti Mountains.

EXPERIENCE AFRICAN SNOW

Why fly overseas when you can enjoy awesome downhill action, bars and restaurants with a vibey après-ski scene at Afriski? Everything you’d expect from a ski resort, including epic slopes, ski lifts and the opportunity for you (and your kids) to practice (or gain) some serious snow skills.

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Afriski is just five hours’ drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria, via quick and easy border posts. Winter driving conditions in Lesotho can be unpredictable, so it’s best to come prepared and check with your Trip PA before taking your trip!

Day trips are also available 😉

DISCOVER LESOTHO

Although surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho has retained a distinct cultural identity thanks to the protective mountain peaks that ring the kingdom. Lesotho has the distinction of possessing the highest low point of any country: you can’t be at an altitude of less than 1 400m while you’re here.

Lesotho is also one of Africa’s last surviving monarchies. Its people take great pride in their traditions, but are also open to ideas and visitors from beyond their borders. If you’ve spent time in southern Africa, you’ll find that Lesotho is both reassuringly familiar, and refreshingly different.

LESOTHO LANDSCAPE & CLIMATE

Lesotho is defined – both physically and culturally – by its mountains. These include Thabana-Ntlenyana, the highest point in southern Africa. The Maluti Mountains – of which Afriski is part – form the spine of the country and offer superb views over what are known as the ‘Lowlands’ – although nowhere in Lesotho will you get that sinking feeling that comes with descending too far.

Snow can be expected in Lesotho from May to August, although this varies slightly from year to year. Whether blanketed in white, or flushed green with new summer growth, the Maluti Mountains form an arresting spectacle.

Please bear in mind that weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly – it’s best to come prepared for four seasons in each day so that you can make the most of your time at altitude.

DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT & DRIVER’S LICENCE!

Lesotho may not be all that far away, but it is its own country (in every way). That means you’ll be crossing a border each way, and you’ll need to get used to things being a little different. The rules of the road are mostly enforced by on-the-spot cash fines. There’s no need to change money for your visit to Lesotho – South African Rand are universally accepted and circulate alongside local Maloti.

If you’re travelling to Lesotho in winter, please keep an eye on the weather conditions and avoid driving at night, or during or just after heavy snowfall.

EXPLORE

THE KINGDOM OF LESOTHO

Lesotho offers incredible natural beauty and scenic splendour, plus warm hospitality and fascinating history. It’s a wonderfully uplifting country – quite literally, in fact: you’ll often find yourself at altitudes in excess of 3 000m above sea level.

Within Lesotho’s border are approximately 2.5 million people, incredible mountains and some of the best winter and summer leisure opportunities available anywhere.
On your drive to Afriski, you will experience much of what makes Lesotho special. Basotho huts with roofs modelled after the shape of traditional Basotho hats and the recalcitrant livestock standing in the roads are two of the first clues that you’ve arrived somewhere new.

Even while you’re zipping down the slopes or flying along the trails, it’s hard to escape the feeling that things move more slowly in Lesotho. There’s a timeless quality to the rugged peaks and dramatic waterfalls. The Basotho people – often clad in blankets and gumboots – have an uncanny knack for appearing as if by magic, and so too do their smiles.

These will be some of the first things that strike you about Lesotho… and then there’s Afriski.

Whether you’re here in Lesotho and at Afriski in winter or summer, you’ll find that you’re on a natural high from the moment you arrive. It’s a feeling that will last long after you’ve descended the mountain passes and returned home.

The magic of Lesotho never leaves you – it’s one holiday destination that will never let you down.
